Your journey, step by step

Day 1

Colombo to Pinnawala

Travel by morning train from Colombo toward Rambukkana, a journey of approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Continue by tuk-tuk or taxi to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, where visits can be timed around feeding and river-bathing sessions.

Day 2

Pinnawala to Kandy

Transfer to Rambukkana Station for the morning train to Kandy. Your driver will meet you at Kandy Railway Station for a city tour featuring the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, Kandy Lake, the Royal Botanical Gardens and local cultural attractions.

Day 3

Kandy to Nanu Oya and Nuwara Eliya

Take the famous three-to-four-hour hill-country train through tea plantations, villages, tunnels and mountain valleys. From Nanu Oya, continue to Nuwara Eliya for Gregory Lake, a tea estate, Hakgala Botanical Garden and the city's colonial-era scenery.

Day 4

Nanu Oya to Ella

Continue through Sri Lanka's most photographed railway landscapes, with views of tea country, waterfalls, steep valleys and the Nine Arch Bridge before arriving in Ella.

Day 5

Ella city tour and transfer to Mirissa

Explore Ella's highlights, including the Nine Arch Bridge, Little Adam's Peak, Ravana Falls, Ella Rock and a tea factory. Later, travel south to Mirissa.

Day 6

Mirissa to Unawatuna by train

Follow the southern railway beside the Indian Ocean, passing beaches, palm-fringed landscapes, fishing communities and coastal villages on the way to Unawatuna.

Day 7

Unawatuna to Colombo

Enjoy time on the south coast before boarding the final train to Colombo, completing the island-spanning rail journey.
